DESTINED FOR GREATNESS

PRACTICE: If I could do anything I wanted to with my life, I would________.

Purveyors of fast food would become extinct if they depended on me for their existence. That being said, I am amazed and almost dumbfounded at the lengths their advertising/marketing people will take to drive home a point about a specific product to capture the attention of their targeted audience. So,you can just imagine how I reacted when I saw this message, “Destined for Greatness,” plastered on the side of a semitrailer delivering supplies to a fast food chain store or distribution site. I laughed. Under the lettering was the image of the common potato. The ad was brilliant – most of America loves this fast food chain’s french fries.

My brain couldn’t release the simple potato image, so I did some research and it was fascinating. Did you know that the potatoes roots (no pun intended) can be traced back to before Christ? The potato is a staple food for most of the world’s population and it is the fourth most common consumed crop in the world. Potatoes can be frozen, consumed fresh and dehydrated. You can bake, boil, mash, fry and make them into a gazillion recipes. They can be used for household task like removing an ink mark. If you should need a cold or hot compress, freeze it or microwave because the potato can hold heat and cold for a long time. A good way to clean your eyes glasses or windows is to rub them with a potato and then wipe clean. The starch of the potato is used in the wood and paper industry. Potatoes are a good source of vitamin C and a ton of other minerals. The simple potato – destined for greatness/greatness achieved.

When the potato is extracted from the soil, it is just an odd shaped tuber. When it is used, unless it is being baked, it looks nothing like it did when it was extracted. Its greatness lies in the potato NOT remaining as it comes out the soil but in the ability of others to look at the tuber and see beyond the obvious.

We too are destined for greatness. Our greatness is postponed or cancelled if we don’t allow ourselves and others to see, push and pull us to do things, go places and become what we could never dream of being or doing. The common french fry is not from France. It is thought to have originated in Belgium and was a substitute for frying small fish when the waters would be too frozen to get to the fish. We are meant to be more than a staple for the table of our and other’s lives. Like potato starch, we are sometimes the agent that binds things together. Sometimes we are the medicine for someone’s soul. There are the times when we can heat some one up or cool down a potentially explosive situation. We are meant to be surprised (potato cake) and be the surprise for those around us (potato as a glass cleaner). You and I can help someone heal or someone feel beautiful and find their self -worth. There is much more to each of us than meets the eye. BUT and it is a BIG BUT – I and you have to be willing to be tested and tried, challenged and challenging. We must be willing to experiment and to be an experiment.

DESTINED FOR GREATNESS? ABSOLUTELY. If a small tuber can make it to that status, I know that we can.

Proverbs 15:22

PONDER THIS THOUGHT – I am prone to take the safe path of least resistance versus the path that might require me to be stretched and pulled into someone that I might not recognize.
