FOUNDATION

Writer: Gwen HendersonGwen Henderson

PRACTICE: What principle(s) is the foundation of your life?

There is a reason we live in an environment with seasons. Seasons are necessary for rest and productivity. We like flora and fauna of nature, can’t produce without rest but neither can we rest all the time and hope to produce…balance. There is a reason we need others – friends – not just casual friends but good “thick and thin” friends. Both are nice to have but a good friend is essential. There is a reason for having a sense of identity rooted in your own unique culture and a good spiritual foundation. And there is a reason why we need to be an active participant in life- missing out on nothing if possible, cherishing/investing in family and our inner circle. Why do I highlight these? They are the foundation of my good life…not perfect life but good life.

I am one who has been forced to see the value of rest for productivity. When there is much to be done, rest seems optional. As exhaustion increase so does the potential for mistakes - costly to productivity. I can’t recount the times that I have had to redo a task because I pushed through to completion when exhausted. As for friends, having someone to be truthful, upfront and honest with you whom you love and who loves you is a security blanket that insulates your life and living like no other.

THE CORNERSTONE of my foundation is knowing who I am and what and who I believe in. This is my North Star. So sometimes when the world is knocking me about, spirituals, the music of my culture, soothe my soul. All these things continuously strengthen my foundation for a good life and I continuously seek ways to be actively involved in living it.

I love nothing more than being with friends and family – eating, listening, laughing and sharing joys and struggles. I love nothing more than seeing other’s dreams become reality. Their successes nurture my soul. There is a sense of wholeness that is like no other when I can carry the load of another for just a little while.

My foundation is the starting point for all that I am. It is the launching pad from which I enter the world each day. My foundation of rest, relationships and a rooted identity, gives me the confidence to boldly face the world and the good and bad it dishes up.

Luke 6:48

PONDER THIS THOUGHT: Shaky foundation, shaky life. Good foundation, good life.
