QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
“It is not the answer that enlightens, but the question.” Eugene Ionesco, Romanian French playwright.
Knowing the right question is difficult. I eventually get to the right one after asking a series of questions that were answered but didn’t supply the needed or desired information. In a conversation, it might be stated like this, “the real question is…”
I see this played out in my life around mealtime. My husband will meander up the stairs from the basement to the she shed and ask, “What’s for dinner?” Nine out of ten times, my reply is “I don’t know. What do you want?” He almost always responds with “I don’t care. I will eat whatever you make.” To which I respond, “That doesn’t help, I’ll think of something.” He replies, “Well I’ll grab a snack.” Me speaking, “Oh, are you ready to eat NOW?” He answers, “Yes.” Of course, we get in the car and head to a restaurant.
It took three questions and answers for him to get to what he really wanted – he was hungry and ready to eat – What’s for dinner? What do you want for dinner? Are you ready to eat now? One statement and question could have addressed all this above upfront. “I am ready for dinner. Are we eating at home or going out?”
I have begun using questions to try to focus my day, so they don’t look like the dinner discussion. I pose them to you. You might want to share the questions with others and get their feedback as it relates to you. A discovery may be made that will change the focus of your day.
What are you in love with? What captures your imagination and attention? What gets you out of bed in the morning? What informs how you spend your evenings? How do you want to spend your weekends? What breaks your heart? What amazes you? What fills you with joy and gratitude? And just so you will know, I don’t always get to do what my answers would dictate. After all I am a part of a village and a family unit.
The questions and subsequent answers will most likely be enlightening. I think you will probably not only discover what you love and are enthusiastic about but also who. A love and passion for anything causes the pot to boil. Everything is affected by the answer, but the enlightenment began with the question.
PONDER THIS THOUGHT---Progress begins with a question.
