THEY MATTER

PRACTICE: Who informs/influences your daily life?

It came as a surprise that three men primarily influence me. I couldn’t believe it. Not that all aren’t fine examples of humanity, but two of the three? Well…read on.

It didn’t surprise me, nor will you be surprised if you have been on this journey with me for a while, that my hubby is one of the three…as you read this, we have just celebrated an anniversary. Much of the way I live and the way we have created a haven for ourselves, and others is informed by him. I often see in him the person that I want to be. I won’t dwell on him, but he and I are peanut butter and jelly between two slices of multigrain bread.

I interact with the other two on an average of once a week and almost never up close and personal. One came into my life about twelve years ago, the other just over four. One teaches and coaches the physical me and the other attends to my spirit.

The voice of my yoga instructor manages to speak to me in more places and situations than he will ever know. When I am meditating and fighting to control my thought, I hear, “THIS -HERE – NOW or struggling to push beyond my strength when exercising, I hear his words, “HONOR YOUR BODY.” Sometimes when I am standing in the cashier’s line, I hear, “SPREAD THE COLLARBONES, ROLL THE SKIN OF THE SHOULDERS DOWN THE BACK.” Perhaps my most cherished whisper of his is, “SURRENDER THE EGO OF THE MIND TO THE WISDOM OF THE HEART. I see in him a calmness and contentment that I want for my life.

The other influencer, my pastor, speaks wisdom to my heart almost weekly making it easier to surrender the ego of the mind to the wisdom of the heart. I have wondered why he informs my life so profoundly. I think it is because of his gift of transparency. A line in a message earlier this year, “YOU DON’T GET TO CHOOSE ALL THAT YOU GET,” put into words what I have felt a lot of days in these last few years. He followed those words with the declaration, “NOTHING IS WASTED.” I see in him a level of transparency as he uses his personal life stories to illustrate the lessons of his words that I strive for.

Before thinking critically about who informs my day-to-day existence, I am sure the list would have been more female oriented. I am blessed to share a life with an awesome partner, but awesome partners can’t be everything. The universe has seen fit to bless my life with others to fill in the gaps. These are not the only three. But these three MATTER - a lot!!!
