THE WIND CHIMES
Everyone should have a quest hound in their life. My husband is one as is the next-door neighbor. When they decide to purchase something or want to know something, persistence shifts into overdrive. I accepted a marriage proposal in November, got an engagement ring in March and was married in July. Why? The man of my dreams was on a quest to find the best possible diamond for his money. The neighbor purchased a new car after more than a year of research. I was reminded of the engagement ring quest when my husband decided to purchase wind chimes for our outdoor space.
So much information was gathered. Did you know wind chimes can cost a lot of money? That they created in different musical keys? If memory serves me our chimes chime in the key of G. Did you know that they can be created from a wide range of materials? Ultimately, wind chimes are a group of objects that dangle from something to generate musical notes when they bump into each other. It took weeks for my husband to find the chime that produced the sound he wanted for the money he wanted to spend. I thanked him for his persistence. They, along with birds chirping, frogs croaking, crickets “cricking, jet engines roaring compose the soundtrack for our porch sitting, our grounding, and our kicking our heels while enjoying life.
It occurred to me one cool breezy morning, that chimes are incapable of changing the musical key of their design. Ours are hung to be sheltered from the elements yet receive the necessary wind to chime and to be heard on the porch as well as in our bedroom. What does change is the rhythm of the notes.
The chimes remain at rest unless the wind blows. Sometimes the wind blows but its direction does not disturb the chimes. When the wind blows in the right direction, the melodic sound of the chime is heard.
I have a message from the wind chimes. At rest – undisturbed living is comfortable. Undisturbed living, however, is of little use to anyone but the one at rest. We may be beautiful to look at in our restful place. However, as we are tossed and turned by the wind challenges of life, others can be blessed by the melodic or dissonant sound we produce. Resting is necessary but rest is not necessarily strengthening. The wind challenges can be soft and gentle, producing a gentle slow rhythm. Other times they are strong and fierce, and our rhythm is a cacophony of sound that highlights and makes known to the world what we are experiencing.
Of this one thing we can be sure. Eventually the wind will cease blowing and like the windchimes we can return to the beautiful state of rest which is necessary to prepare for the next wind.
